Olive: Parents Need To Start Having Conversations About Sex With Their Teenagers

Harrowing statistics revealed by the Minister of State for Education and Sports Hamson Obua Denis indicate that 644, 955 teenage pregnancies were recorded during the two year long Covid 19 lockdown. This has compelled RX Radio presenter Olive Najjuma to implore parents to talk to their children about sex.

She gave the advice duringThe Fatboy Show in conformity with the State Minister’s remarks on the increasing cases of school dropouts and defilement as he commissioned a science laboratory at Ocer Campion Jesuit in Gulu.

According to the Minister, parents should be blamed for this because many deliberately neglected their roles and responsibilities during the Covid 19 induced lockdown.

“As parents, I think its about time we start having conversations with teenagers about sex because I’ve noticed that most parents shy away from sex and contraceptives conversations with their children. Some of them even think that because they pray at home, then their children won't be active,” Olive said.

As a mother of 2 daughters and 1 boy, a teenager, Olive admitted that although it is uncomfortable to have such conversations with children, she was going to have one with her 14 year old son.

Sarah Apollo, a mother of one boy aged 8 said that parents need to start having warning conversations with their children about paedophiles since there are reports where children got defiled by their relatives such as uncles, brothers, cousins, neighbours, strangers and the like.

“It's important to have these conversations with your children at an early age so that in the event where an adult tries to take advantage of them, they are able to speak up. That is the other way we can protect our children from early pregnancies,” she said.

The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive and Sarah every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
