The Fatboy Show Presenter Olive Najjuma has confessed that she had never tasted alcohol till 2020, a few months before the pandemic hit the country.
“I used to go out with friends and by 10 p.m, I would be tired because my friends would be drinking while I didn’t. Eventually, I started drinking in 2020 and I made the decision myself,” she said.
She added, “I will not blame the lockdown because I started around January and February. But Of course, it exacerbated the situation.”
She made the revelation in a discussion about the advice she would give someone who wants to start drinking.
“If someone has decided to drink and is ready, I would tell them a few things. First, alcohol can embarrass you. If you are a lady, first figure out which drinks to take and how much you can stand,” she advised.
In his opinion, James Onen, the co-host of the show, said perhaps Ugandans overconsume alcohol because it is the only fun outdoor activity they know.
“Maybe we do alcohol in excess because we do not know other ways of enjoying ourselves like bazungu. They will go skiing, sky diving, and bowling. As for us, our idea of recreation is sitting down to have pork and drinks,” he supposed.
Olive agreeing added that lately, there are more outdoor fun activities besides drinking that people need to try. She mentioned activities like swimming, gymming, Bungee jumping, and going to the cinema.
Mrisho, a contributor to the show, opined that Ugandans could be hinged to drinking because of the cultural attachment to alcohol.
In the past, people in Ugandans such as the Acholi and the Itesots would sit on Malwa in the evenings. I think it became more of a socialization activity because people still enjoy doing drinks for socialization than other fun activities,” he presumed.
Since he does not drink, Mrisho said he plays football and other sports activities for fun. He however advised those intending to start drinking to be of age.
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, and Sarah every weekday from 6 am to 10 am on RX Radio.
