Integrity is one of the things most people will abandon when it comes to money, especially when it's found deserted in a place the owner can hardly recall. However, when Joan Nansubuga’s honesty was put to the test, she decided to give back cash worth 36 million shillings she found in a hotel room she was cleaning.
On finding the money, the waitress at Brovad Sands Lodge Kalangala immediately handed it over to the hotel management which contacted the Eritrean tourists who had forgotten it in a wallet stacked in dollar notes.
Eric Baluku, the manager of the hotel, said that Nansubuga had done an act that most Ugandans would not have done had they been in her position.
Commenting on the act, Fatboy asked the listeners of RX Radio whether they would return such an amount of money in case one found it.
“I don't know if I would have returned it. Maybe, maybe not… I am not sure! Don’t judge me. How about you? Can you answer that question very easily? Would you return 10,000 dollars you just found in a room somewhere? Be honest,” Fatboy asked.
Nansubuga in appreciation for her uncommon act was awarded 100,000 shillings by the hotel management which Fatboy thought was ‘interesting.”
“So you return 10,000 dollars, about 36 million that you just found in a room and for that, they just give you 100,000 shillings! Are they just gonna be okay with this woman walking away with 100,000 shillings? Is that even 50 dollars?! I don't think so and yet she saved you 10,000 dollars! How about you gave her 1000 dollars? To me that would be fair, I believe one good deed deserves another.”
He then wondered what they must have been doing to forget the wallet with such an amount of money. “I've stayed in hotels and it doesn't matter what I am doing in that hotel or who I am doing it with, I ain't gonna leave a wallet full of 10,000 dollars behind in a hotel room. Never!”
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive and Sarah every weekday from 6am to 10am on RX Radio.
