RX Radio presenter James Onen deliberated that indirect communication, in the long run, ruins relationships because it becomes empty. His submission follows a discussion on the famous Fatboy show where he and his fellow presenter Olive responded to the question of whether over-communication ruins relationships.
From a personal story, Fatboy narrated having had a girlfriend who constantly complained of having limited communication with him even if they spent an afternoon talking to each other.
“If only people had direct conversations with their partners, it would solve a lot of problems because if we can sit for three hours and you still say we don’t communicate, it makes me feel like there is no point in doing it,” Fatboy reasoned.
He also recognized the fact that sometimes one of the partners may not feel an emotional attachment to their significant other despite talking for hours.
Olive in agreement said sometimes a couple could only have surface conversations in which one of the parties ends up frustrated.
However, Winnie, a contributor to the show believed that over-communication is non-existent but believed people need to openly communicate their needs and expectations to each other to avoid misunderstandings.
“It is about telling my partner my preferences and talking about how we can adjust what makes me feel uncomfortable because his way of showing me affection may not suit well with me. For instance, if he calls ten times a day, I will say, I appreciate but because it is too much for me, I will ask that we change to three times a day,” she said
The Fatboy show is hosted by James Onen aka Fatboy, Olive, and Sarah every weekday from 6 am to 10 am on RX Radio.
