Fatboy and Olive: Ugandans need Immediate accountability for Covid 19 Funds from the AG

Recently the office of the Auditor General (AG) came out and said they were unable to adequately do their job because their scope of work was too wide while funding and human resource was limited.

The Auditor General’s office is currently one month behind the schedule of submitting the much-awaited 2019/2020 financial year audit report to parliament. The report for the financial year ended June 30, 2020, was expected by December 31, 2020.

Under the Constitution and the National Audit Act, the Office of the Auditor-General is required to audit all Public Accounts of Uganda and submit to Parliament an annual report of the Accounts audited. The public offices include the Courts, Central Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Local Government Administrations, Public Universities, Uganda Missions abroad and Corporations or other bodies established by an Act of Parliament.

While on Friday’s Show, The Fatboy Show presenters James Onen aka Fatboy and his co-host Olive Najjuma noted that it is unfortunate that the country is not prioritising funding for the AG’s office because it is important in fighting corruption and mismanagement of funds.

“So, this means that some of the public officers will go away with mismanagement of public funds? My suggestion is that AG starts with the most crucial areas where there has been a lot of suspicion and mismanagement like the Covid-19 funds. There was a lot of donations from the private sector and funders and yet we are being told that we need more money, we need accountability for those funds,” Fatboy said.

Olive noted that government should cut off some of its spending on some issues that can be foregone.

“Instead of spending billions to buy MPs luxurious cars, why doesn’t government give enough funds to the AG to recruit more human resource because auditing is a complicated task and if they have to look into the whole country, then it is important that they have enough manpower,” she said.
